Those Wacky Family Reunions

Those Wacky Family Reunions

Almost all of us think that at least one member of our family is crazy. Many people can also find it hard to understand a certain family and its dynamics. Each family is unique and the combination of the different members forms a complicated mix. Only a brave person can attempt to introduce an outsider to the mess of his or her family.

The complexity or lunacy of a family becomes most apparent during family reunions. However, many people still choose to hold and attend these implosions waiting to happen. There are also some people who make the mistake of bringing along a friend or significant other to these reunions.

A lot of family reunions can suddenly become rough for some reasons. Personally, I have never really looked forward to one, but I have a hard time avoiding them. Maybe it's because I am doomed with a belief that families are connected on some deep level that should be respected or a sense of family loyalty. Most of the time, I end up at the family reunions thrown by my relatives even if I don't want to be there.

The sense of alienation I feel at family reunions is the biggest reason why I do not enjoy them. I feel that most of my relatives are different from me. We are genetically and socially connected, but our political and religious beliefs are somehow radically different. This sense of being unconnected from my close and distant relatives is a major reason why these little get-togethers make me feel so strange.

I can't stop myself from wondering if this alienation is also the reason why most people do not enjoy going to family reunions. If it is, then there is a reason why many of us feel unrelated to our families. On the other hand, maybe we are more alike than we would like to believe. There is also a possibility that it is these similarities that make us uncomfortable with each other.

We see a little bit of our relatives in ourselves, but we are not happy about that for one reason or another. Perhaps our families point out to us the things that we don't like about ourselves and the genetic relationship there makes us feel as though those things are permanent. I know a few people who feel right at home at family reunions, but I just do not believe that all of us can really be all that different from our families.
